Movies in February

What do you think this is the Army, where you shoot ’em a mile away? You’ve gotta get up close like this and – bada-BING! – you blow their brains all over your nice Ivy League suit.

Movies at the Theater

I saw two movies in February that may very well end up among my favorite movies of 2019. “Free Solo” is an intense, gripping, amazing film based on a truly incredible human accomplishment. It quite deservedly won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature last week. “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World” is the perfect cap to what I believe to be the best animated trilogy of all time. The way the character arcs (both human and dragon) come to a conclusion is beautiful. I’m hoping to see it again before it leaves theaters.

Movies at Home

I slacked a little on watching new movies at home this month. Partly because I just like watching movies multiple times, and partly because I recently got “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild” and simply cannot stop playing it. That being said, I was finally able to get my partner to watch parts I and II of “The Godfather” with me. It’s always fun to re-watch a movie you know backwards and forwards with someone who has never seen it. It helps you see things from a slightly different point of view and I love it.

  • How To Train Your Dragon

Movies Added to My Collection

I’m always a little weary of buying titles that I can already access online, but with “Westworld” it is totally worth it. That show deserves to be seen in the best possible fashion, and owning the 4K version will allow me to do just that. We don’t get the third season until 2020, so I’ve got plenty of time to re-watch it. “Hot Rod” was a Valentine’s Day gift, and I love it! I haven’t watched it in several years, but I’m excited to re-visit it.

Movies in December

One thing I know for sure. Don’t do it like me. Do it like you.

A few days into the next month, but here we go…

Movies at the Theater

December was a banner month at the movies for me. Not necessarily in the number of movies I saw, but rather the quality of the ones I did. I was lucky enough to see the new restoration of “Schindler’s List” during its week-long run at the Dolby Cinema and it was astounding. Then came “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” which may have been the best movie of 2018. Hopefully, it is able to escape the Animated Feature category at the Oscars because I think it deserves a shot at Best Picture.

Finally, I saw “The Favourite”, a film which is getting all sorts of awards buzz, on New Year’s Eve. It is now the second Yorgos Lanthimos film I have seen (with “The Lobster” being the other) and for some reason his work just does not connect with me. I can respect the craft (it is an impeccably made film) and the performances (all three leading women turn in brilliant performances), but his distinctive style is just too much for me at times.

Movies at Home

Watching a new release like “Roma” at home was a bit strange, but if Netflix wants to bring us more films of this caliber I am extremely here for it. “Roma” is the cinematic masterpiece everyone says it is. It didn’t end up being one of My Favorite Movies of 2018, but it was as visually stunning and deeply moving as any movie to come out last year.

  • There Will Be Blood
  • Coco
  • They’ll Love Me When I’m Dead (*)
  • Love Actually (*)
  • Mission Impossible: Fallout
  • Roma (*)
  • Kiki’s Delivery Service

Movies Added to My Collection

Christmas was good to me this year. I received the 4K editions of “2001: A Space Odyssey” and “Pacific Rim: Uprising”, as well as “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang” as Christmas gifts. I had been waiting to re-watch “2001: A Space Odyssey” since I saw it in IMAX back in August, and I’m so glad to finally have it! It had been delayed two months from the original release date due to some sort of disc issue and I was getting nervous if it was ever going to be released.

  • 2001: A Space Odyssey
  • Pacific Rim: Uprising

Movies in May

Without even thinking about it, I used to be able to fly. Now I’m trying to look inside myself and find out how I did it.

Movies at the Theater

I love getting the chance to see older movies in theaters, and this month I actually got to see two in “Can’t Hardly Wait” and “Porco Rosso”. If “Porco Rosso” taught me anything it’s that I need to see absolutely every Studio Ghibli film because even their lesser known movies are simply outstanding. I want to try to see most of the movies during Studio Ghibli Fest 2018, but if not I will try and get them on Blu-ray.

  • Tully
  • Can’t Hardly Wait
  • Deadpool 2
  • Porco Rosso
  • Solo: A Star Wars Story

Movies Added to My Collection

As for My Collection, it was a pretty slow month…right up until Memorial Day weekend. Vintage Stock (my favorite place to find used Blu-rays) had a “buy 2 get 1 free” sale and I was able to pick up a couple good movies. “Tombstone” and “The Last Samurai” had both been on my wishlist for a while now. Then, after seeing “Porco Rosso” in the theater I ended up getting “Kiki’s Delivery Service” and I’m completely in love with it. I’ve already watched it twice and would watch it a third time in a heartbeat.

  • Tombstone
  • Lady Bird
  • The Brothers Bloom
  • Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2
  • The Last Samurai
  • Kiki’s Delivery Service
